The eyes are probably the most important organ connected to the senses - we use our eyes everyday for literally every task our body performs. Eyes, like all other organs, need certain vitamins to stay healthy and work well into your later years.
The importance of vitamins for eyes cannot be understated - certain eye vitamins can literally decrease your chances of getting an age-related eye disease by 25%. Only now are medical research teams starting to understand the role of vitamins and how they integrate with the intricacies of the eye.

Vitamins for the eyes are no exception to that consensus. Evidence suggests that nutrition is a key factor in the general health of the eyes as well. Oxidation causes proteins in the eyes to clump together in cataracts, for example, the clumps of protein cloud over the lens thereby impeding vision. The body attempts to counter the effects of oxidation by producing and using antioxidants such as are found in Vitamins E, A and in carotenoid. An example of how the body defends itself is seen in how carotenoid is used as a defender.

A good source of Zeaxanthin can also be found in tangerines, oranges, sweet peppers, broccoli, corn and spinach, also certain types of lettuce.

Vitamin C and Zinc are claimed to be especially good for maintaining eye health in the elderly. Vitamin C being a water-soluble vitamin is best taken in its natural juice state from oranges and other citrus fruits or recommended in a liquid supplement.

Vitamin E can be found in nut oils, sunflower seeds, whole grains, wheat germ, and spinach. Antioxidants such as vitamin E help to protect cells against the effects of free radicals. Vitamin E works well in enhancing and protecting vitamin A. There are promising results from tests to show that vitamin E may prevent or slow the onset of cataracts.


Choosing an eye vitamins brand

When choosing a brand of eye vitamins it is a good idea to compare vitamin and mineral composition compared to daily values and of course prices. Vitamins made for the eye should contain Vitamins A, C, E, B2 and minerals Zinc and Selenium. Of course eye vitamins now may contain the popular new Lutein. Lutein is an antioxidant whose true value is still being studied but is already gaining much attention.

Lutein is concentrated mostly in the retina, lens and macula and thus it is assumed that having an efficient amount of Lutein will keep the eyes healthy. Also it is recommended that certain awareness is taken when taking specially formulated eye vitamins that follow the NEI formula for AREDs.

This is especially critical for smokers where tests have linked beta-carotene and smokers to certain diseases. So if you are a smoker it is better to look for eye vitamins with no beta-carotene. •    it is hard to obtain or prepare fresh fruit and vegetables

However, experts agree that taking supplements is not a substitute for a healthy diet.
